Cocoon by Sealy Mattress Review
The bed in a box industry has really taken off in the past few years partly due to the great value proposition DTC mattress companies offer – and Cocoon by Sealy and Casper are no exception. Both companies offer free shipping, a 100 night risk free trial and free returns. Yes, that means the mattress will arrive at your doorstep in a somewhat small box within a matter of days – no more shopping around multiple brick-n-mortar retail stores and loading up mattresses yourself.
Then you get 100 nights to try out the mattress. If you don’t like it after the 2nd night or the 98th night, give Sealy or Casper a call and they’ll refund your money and come pick up the mattress free of charge. Plus, on top of that, both companies also back their mattresses with a 10-year warranty. Needless to say, Sealy and Casper are trying to make it as easy as possible for consumers to try out their mattresses because they are that confident you’ll love their product. And it’s hard to argue – both mattresses are pretty awesome but they do differ somewhat. Let’s get to these bed in a box mattress reviews.
Cocoon By Sealy Mattress Overview
Sealy is not new to the mattress game. They are one of the most established and well-known brands in the industry. However, they are new to the DTC / bed in a box industry. Sealy launched their first bed in a box, Cocoon, in 2016 and it quickly took off. The mattress was even featured on Oprah’s List of Favorite Things last year. The Cocoon line is comprised of two different mattresses – you’ve got the Cocoon Classic, which is their baseline mattress and the Cocoon Chill, which is designed to dissipate heat better. Sealy also gives you the option to somewhat customize each mattress – You can choose between a soft or firm feel. For the purposes of this review though, we will be referring to the Cocoon Chill Soft model so keep that in mind.
Cocoon Mattress Construction
The Cocoon mattress is made up of 3 layers of foam. You’ve got the bottom layer, which is super resilient and gives the mattress its support. Next you have what Sealy calls its “Comfort Layer”. Basically, if you choose the soft version, it will have more of a “in-the-bed” feel vs a “on-the-bed” feel if you go with the firm model. Then on top of that is a layer of high-quality memory foam which adapts to your body’s size and shape. The end result is a super comfortable memory foam feel
But if you have slept on a traditional memory foam mattress before, there’s a decent chance you’ve probably noticed that you can get quite hot during the middle of the night due to the physical properties of some memory foam materials. Well, that’s where the Chill in Cocoon Chill comes into the play. The Cocoon Chill mattress has a stretch-knit cover that it says is infused with propriety phase change material – that’s a lot of fancy words to say the cover is able to absorb and dissipate heat. And it definitely works pretty well.
The Cocoon Chill was one of the coolest, if not the coolest sleeping mattress we tested during our Ultimate 6-Brand Mattress Comparison. We actually thought something might have been wrong because the cover was almost wet to the touch when we first unboxed the mattress – pretty crazy. This is a department where Cocoon definitely has a leg up on Casper – not that Casper is bad by any means. We just think the Cocoon Chill mattress does a slightly better job at regulating heat.
Cocoon Mattress Firmness, Motion Transfer & Overall Feel
We give the Cocoon Chill Soft a 5.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale – 1 being like laying on a 12-year old pillow and 10 being rock hard. So with a score like that, we obviously think it strikes a pretty nice balance between being soft while also providing quite a bit of support. It’s slightly firmer than Casper but not by much. Now we did test out the soft model so our best guess would be that the firm model would land somewhere between 6 and 6.5 on our scale – which would be closer to the likes of Bear Mattress [see on bearmattres.com].
We felt that Cocoon would be perfect for combo sleepers, basically anyone that rotates between sleeping on their back, side, and stomach at night. It’s soft enough for side sleepers, but firm enough for back and stomach sleepers. If, however, you exclusively sleep on your side, you may considering Casper over Cocoon on account of Casper being a little bit softer.
In terms of motion transfer, the Sealy Cocoon mattress performs quite well. In fact, it was one the best mattresses we’ve tested. We put a beer can at the end of the bed and started jumping on the other end like our favorite football team just won the Super Bowl and the can was not phased at all. So if your partner happens to toss and turn quite a bit during the middle of the night, you won’t have to worry about waking up.
Cocoon Sealy Coupon Code and Price
The Cocoon mattresses are priced pretty moderately compared to the rest of the industry. The Cocoon Classic is the cheapest between the three different mattresses. Prices for the classic model range from $399 for a twin to $999 for a king. The Cocoon Chill is slightly more expensive with prices ranging from:
The good news is that Sealy is one of the mattress companies who fairly often has discounts and coupon codes you can take advantage of. In fact, right now you can get $100 Off any mattress w/ code RIZKNOWS.
Cocoon Mattress Reviews Verdict
If pressed to choose, we’d have to go with the Chill model over the classic model just because we like it’s cooling capabilities so much. Either way though, it’s hard to be critical of either Cocoon mattress. They provide a great balance between comfort and stability, they’re moderately priced and the Chill model is great at regulating heat.
In terms of the Cocoon by Sealy vs Casper decision, it’s a touch call. As you’ll see in a minute, there is a lot to like about each mattress. At the end of the day it just comes down to what characteristics/features you like better as both mattresses are priced almost exactly the same. If you like a slightly more supportive feel and keeping cool while sleeping is a chief concern, it’s hard to pass on the Cocoon Chill.

Casper Mattress Review
Casper Mattress Review Overview
If you’re reading this, you probably don’t need an introduction to Casper. Chances are you’ve most likely heard the name before. Casper didn’t invent the bed in a box concept but they sure helped bring the industry into the spotlight. They were one of the first DTC mattress companies to really grab national attention and as a result they grew to become a $100+ million company almost overnight.
Casper Mattress Construction
Like the Cocoon mattress, the Casper mattress is constructed with various layers of foam – Casper just has one more layer. It starts with a 5″ bottom layer to provide support for the bed. Next is a layer of Zoned Support foam followed by a layer of responsive memory foam. And finally on top, you’ve got a layer of open-cell foam. Supposedly, the top layer uses convection and conduction to flow heat away from your body. Honestly, that’s a little too much science for me – I will say the Casper mattress is pretty good at regulating heat.

I never woke up the in the middle of the night drenched in sweat or anything, I’d just say the Cocoon Chill has a slight leg up here. Then to wrap everything up (literally) is a woven cover that can be zipped off but Casper recommends you just spot clean it rather than machine wash it.
Casper Firmness, Responsiveness and Motion Transfer
As eluded to earlier, the Casper mattress comes in slightly below Cocoon on the firmness scale. We give the mattress a 4.75 to 5.75 out of 10, meaning we think it has a perfect balance between being soft and comfortable while also providing the necessary support needed for your body. It truly is a nice mix. Casper definitely has this thing figured out. Once you lay down, all you want to do is take a nap or binge watch some Netflix.
One thing to note – If you do happen to sit or stand in one particular place, the mattress does compress a bit, but once you lay down and spread out your body it does a good job of cradling your heavier body parts and providing the needed support.
Additionally, Casper is pretty much the quintessential mattress for combo sleepers and side sleepers. If you roll around a lot in your sleep, ending up on your back, side, and stomach at some point throughout the nice, Casper is a really good mattress for you. If you sleep mostly on your back and stomach, you may consider a little more firm mattress, but Casper will do fine. If you’re overweight, Casper probably isn’t the best option, only because it is quite soft. In this case, Cocoon might be a better option.
Also, motion transfer is pretty good with Casper. It too passed our beer can test with flying colors so no need to worry if your partner moves around a lot in his/her sleep.
Casper Mattress Price + Coupon Code
Casper mattresses are priced a little higher than the Cocoon Chill. Prices range from $595 for a twin to $1,395 for a king.
Like Sealy though, you can sometimes find a Casper mattress discount code or Casper mattress coupon code to knock off an additional ~$50 off your purchase. Right now, you can use code RIZKNOWS for $100 Off.
Casper Bed Review Verdict
The Casper mattress is a solid choice – no doubt about it. The company would not be where it is today if the product didn’t live up to expectations. The mattress is ultra-comfortable and does a pretty decent job of keeping you cool.
In regards to Cocoon Chill, I already kind of already hinted at why you would pick one over the other above. In Casper’s case, if you like a slightly softer feel, I think Casper is the way to go. I think you would really like how the top layer of foam contours to your body and provides a little bounce. Given they are both about the same price though, you really can’t go wrong either way. Now go grab some ZZZs.
