2920 Mattress Review

Purple Mattress Review Outline and Overview
2920 Mattress Shipping, Returns, Trial Period & Warranty
Like most bed in a box mattresses, the 2920 mattress ships for free. The bed will arrive at your door compressed in a box. Once you un-roll it and let it inflate, you’ll have 100 nights to test out the bed. If you decide you don’t like the mattress at any point during the trial period, just give the company a call and they will send someone to your house or apartment to pick it up and issue you a full refund. 2920 also backs their mattress with a 10 year warranty. All of this is pretty standard for the bed in a box industry.
2920 Mattress Construction
The 2920 mattress starts with a 1.5″ layer of dense support foam. The company states this layer is ‘edge-to-edge’ firm (i.e. it doesn’t get softer or compress as you move towards the edges). Next is a 5.5″ layer of core support foam. This just adds another layer of support – it’s just not as firm as the layer below. On top of the core support foam is a 1″ layer of proprietary foam that takes qualities from both memory foam and latex foam. It sort of acts as a transitional layer from the dense foam below to the softer top layer. And speaking of that top layer, 2920 uses a 2″ layer of what they call their “Pressure Relief Layer”. They call this a new generation foam with millions of micro air coils, which are supposed to help with airflow, pressure relief and motion control. All in all, the mattress is comprised of four layers and totals 10″ thick.

Wrapping all these layers is a thick, soft cover. It is removable but the company states you should refrain from machine washing it. Instead, if you happen to spill something on it or get it dirty, you should just spot clean it with a mild detergent. The company also recommends you rotate the bed frequently. They say you should rotate it once a month for the first six months to truly break it in and then once every six months thereafter to avoid any sinkage. In testing this bed, we found that to be very important. Jeff’s friend slept on this mattress every night for about four months and you could already feel the body impression he had created by laying in the same spot every night. Morale of the story – rotate this bed.
2920 Mattress Overall Feel, Firmness, & Sleeper Type
As you read above, this is an all-foam bed and as such, it has a very soft foam feel. Jeff commented that the new generation top layer sort of feels like a lighter memory foam. It’s a very comfortable and accommodating bed overall. In terms of firmness, we’d put it in our medium category. Just for reference though – Jeff and Matt weight around 170-180 pounds. Someone that’s a little heavier (like Jeff’s friend) might think it belongs in the medium soft category, while a more petite person might say it belongs in the medium firm category. Also, keep in mind that this bed will soften up quite a bit over time.
We think this bed is good for combo sleepers (i.e. people who rotate between their back, stomach and side throughout the night) as long as you’re under around 200-215 pounds. If you’re under this mark, the bed provides enough support to where you don’t feel like you’re sinking into the mattress. When you’re on your side, the bed provides a good amount of pressure relief for your hips and shoulders. However, if you’re over this mark, we’re not sure this bed is the best option for you. Like I mentioned earlier, Jeff’s friend who weighs around 250 pounds, had left a pretty big body impression after just four months of use. Also, you could just see that the bed wasn’t quite supporting his lower back and trunk when he was on his back. Bottom line – if you’re under around 200 pounds, this bed is fine but if you’re over this mark, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. You might want to try a hybrid mattress that incorporates coils for added support and responsiveness (DreamCloud, Saatva and Brooklyn Bedding are a few that come to mind).

2920 Mattress Temperature Regulation
We put beds into one of three categories when it comes to temperature regulation and coolness – warm, neutral or cool. A lot of bed in a box companies like to play up that they have some sort of special technology or material to help keep you cool but to be honest, we’ve only come across a handful of mattresses that are truly cool to the touch and do a good job of dispersing heat. The majority of beds belong in the neutral category. And that’s the case with the 2920 mattress. We know that they play up their micro air coils but we just felt that the bed didn’t actively keep you cool. But it doesn’t sleep hot either – Jeff’s roommate never had an issue in terms of heating up in four months. So as long as you’re not a super hot sleeper, the 2920 mattress will be just fine for you.

2920 Bed Motion Transfer
This is one area where the 2920 mattress really excelled. In our test, we placed a half-full glass of water on end of the bed and then started rolling around on the bed and the water inside the glass barely moved at all. I wasn’t too surprised by this though – generally all-foam beds perform better than hybrid or innerspring mattresses in this regard because they don’t have a ton of bounce. To conclude, I don’t think you’ll have any issues if you or your partner move around a ton in your sleep. I don’t think you’ll be waking each other up.
2920 Mattress Responsiveness
The top layer of the 2920 Sleep mattress is not all that responsive. When you release pressure off the bed, the top layer takes an extra second or two to full pop back and regain its shape. This is pretty common for all foam beds (especially memory foam beds). It’s not a huge deal though – all this means is that you might find it requires a little extra effort to switch between sleeping positions. And obviously the more effort you exert throughout the night, the more restless you might become. But again, this is a minor point – it’s really not that difficult to switch positions. You’ll most likely barely even notice a difference between 2920 and a more responsive mattress like Purple.

2920 Mattress Edge Support
This is an important topic for couples who share a full or queen size bed because let’s face it, at some point in the night, your partner rolls over and starts hogging the middle of the bed and all of a sudden you find yourself curled up near the edge of the bed (we’ve all been there). In this instance, it’s important the edge of your bed is able to still support you and you don’t feel like you’re going to roll right off. Generally, hybrid and innerspring beds are the best when it comes to edge support because of the coils but we’ve also been seeing more and more companies reinforce the edges of their beds with dense foam perimeters. The 2920 mattress does not have anything special around the perimiter of the bed. Instead, they rely on the bottom two layers of the bed to provide the edge support. As such, we think the 2920 mattress is just average in this department. It performs like most other bed in a box mattresses – so not terrible but not great either. You’ll notice a little bit of compression as you slide towards the edge but it’s nothing to be overly concerned with.

2920 Mattress Pricing & Coupon Code
The 2920 mattress pricing is a little deceiving in that on their website, they show the MSRP as a huge number but then have a strike through it and show the true number. So we won’t bother you with those huge numbers. Here’s how the true pricing breaks down:
SIZE | PRICE | DIMENSIONS |
---|---|---|
California King | $1,150 | 72″ x 84″ x 10″ |
King | $1,150 | 76″ x 80″ x 10″ |
Queen | $995 | 60″ x 80″ x 10″ |
Full | $850 | 54″ x 75″ x 10″ |
Twin XL | $675 | 39″ x 80″ x 10″ |
Twin | $600 | 39″ x 75″ x 10″ |
So as you can see, pretty average for the bed in a box industry. 2920 is about the same price as say Leesa and Casper. Also, we don’t see 2920 offer a ton of coupon codes or promo codes but occasionally we will see them run a big sale, often around a holiday [check current 2920 sales].
2920 Mattress Review Verdict
Overall, there’s a lot to like about this bed. It’s soft, comfortable and does a great job of limiting motion transfer. However, we are a little concerned about the durability of this mattress for heavier individuals.
